I tried it again and it seems to have worked! I believe I had ticked the search and replace thing last time but one thing I did differently this go-round was to disable a caching plugin. Maybe that did the trick...
Anyway, I'm going to try it on my main domain shortly and I'll let you know if I run into any difficulty. Thanks for your help!
